Evolution of the TrueMax Gennaker

When J/Boats introduced the J/130 and J/105, one of North Sails designers, Dave Hirsch, was asked to get involved in the development of a new asymmetric design. In order to race against PHRF boats using symmetric spinnakers, the standard asymmetric reaching spinnaker had to be redesigned to allow the boats to sail deeper angles. The TrueMax gennaker is a direct result of the early racing asymmetries designed for the J/105, J/130 and Melges 24.

The luff was made longer, the draft was moved higher and the head of the sail was made bigger. The sail could maintain a stable shape that was easy­to­fly providing better downwind speed. A longer luff allows the sail to move away from the headstay and fly with more projection. By rotating the sail to weather out from behind the mainsail, the boat can sail effectively at deeper downwind angles.

Cruising sailors are always looking for balanced solutions to more downwind speed, especially for short handed crews. The TrueMax has turned out to be a really great sail. More speed, more fun to fly, this is great news.

North TrueMax Gennaker is a more powerful "runner" mold for improved performance at deeper wind angles.

Sailcloth options

North GENNAKERS™ are made of premium nylon (often North's own innovative NorLon™). For all but the largest boats, .75 oz. cloth is generally used. Nylon is strong, light and forgiving ­ all the qualities essential for producing a smooth GENNAKER. North's TriRadial and TrueMax GENNAKERS are available in .75 oz. & 1.5 oz. NorLon and NorLon 250, in a variety of colors. Custom artwork and graphics can be placed on the sail for a fun. personal look.

North Snuffer Plus™

SNUFFER PLUS is a long funnel / sleeve system that gathers and encases your spinnaker in an easy­to­handle tube, making setting and dousing your Gennaker easier and safer, especially for shorthanded crews. The injection molded funnel is designed to minimize twist and wraps while gathering the sail. With SNUFFER PLUS, you deal with an easy­to­handle tube rather than arms full of sailcloth blowing over the rail. A convenient control line quickly pulls the SNUFFER PLUS up or down.
