February 27, 28 and March 1
RABBI MARK WASHOFSKY,
Professor of Rabbinics HUC-JIR

Jewish Law, Responsa and Reform Judaism:
The Enduring Connection

The Joan Goodman Scholar-in-Residence weekend is almost here. Rabbi Mark Washofsky will be acquainting us with responsa, or the series of questions and answers that make up the body of responsa literature.
How did Orthodox rabbis in the past deal with the invention of the automobile and the question of its use on the Sabbath? Certainly, the Torah does not mention automobiles, but the rabbis decided that turning on the ignition causes sparks to be ignited. This act constituted making a fire on the Sabbath which is prohibited in Exodus 35:3.

The advent of new technology creates complex questions that we all face. What is the Reform movement's response to the cloning of human genes?

Be prepared for some exciting discussions during the weekend. Please start thinking about some issues that you would like addressed. There will be time for questions and answers.
