INTRODUCTION
George H. Moss, Jr., a well-known local photographic historian and author,
holds a particular interest in the New Jersey Shore area. This fascination
has inspired him to accumulate over 650 stereographs that document Monmouth
County's shore area from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth
century, as well as to publish a number of books focusing on the Jersey
Shore.
The original stereographs remain in Mr. Moss's private collection. Many
of the stereographs that he graciously extended to the Monmouth County Historical
Association, so that we might record and preserve the images through photographic
copies, may be seen in his book Double Exposure, Mr. Moss's book
on Monmouth County Stereographs.
An integral part of photographic history, stereographs preceded postcards
for use as souvenirs and as correspondence. In fact, many of the stereographs
in this collection feature handwriting on their backs, indicating that they
indeed were used by their purchasers as a "postcard" to friends
and relatives. Where applicable, the penmanship on the back has been interpreted
and presented. The researcher should keep in mind that the translated inscription
is not always accurate.
DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTION
Stored in six containers, this collection presents a clear picture of
shore life in Monmouth County, New Jersey during the Victorian age. The
time period of the stereographs ranges from the mid-1800s through 1910.
The collection provides examples of stereographs produced by Pach Brothers,
a major stereograph producer of Monmouth County images, as well as examples
of works done by over thirty other photographers and publishers. By using
color contact sheets, which allow for a clearer presentation of the stereographs,
rather than black and white proofs, shadowing within the image is distinguishable
from aged portions of the stereographs. Additionally, the color of the cardstock
upon which the images were published can be seen. Knowing the cardstock
color helps to indicate the approximate period of time that a stereograph
was produced.
Organized in three parts, the collection preserves these important images
for generations of future use. PART ONE presents the collection in a series
of photocopied prins, which allows researchers to leaf through the contents
of the collection without causing undue damage to the proofs. Once the researcher
has identified those images that he or she wishes to inspect, the color
contact sheets may be withdrawn from PART TWO of the collection for that
purpose. The THIRD and final part of the collection is the negatives themselves.

The stereograph images contained in this collection depict bathing scenes,
boating scenes at Wesley Lake, Hoey's Gardens and Mansion, the Methodist
meeting grounds in Ocean Grove, hotels and cottages in Long Branch, President
Grant's cottage, famous ships and shipwrecks, as well as other views of
Ocean Grove and Asbury Park. This is an excellent collection for one who
is interested in visualizing what life was like in Monmouth County during
the Victorian era.
PROVENENCE: Original stereographs loaned by George H. Moss, Jr. for the
purpose of preserving the images on color contact sheets and negatives.
RESTRICTIONS: This collection may be used by patrons for research purposes
only. Publishing of the images is not allowed. The MCHA has been grated
the rights to reproduction, publishing, and exhibition for their own purposes.
