DESCRIPTION OF COLLECTION

James Steen (1852 - 1909) was the son of John and Rosa A. MacCrosson Steen. He received his early education at the academy at Trenton, graduated from Princeton University, read law with Charles E. Green, Esq., of Trenton, was admitted to the Bar and began the practice of his profession at Eatontown, NJ. Mr. Steen had an avid interested in New Jersey history and lectured at the Monmouth County Historical Association. The James Steen Collection consists of ocpies (both typed and handwritten) of agreements, bonds and notes (1837 - 1865), deeds (1682 - 1890), inventories (1762 - 1852), letters (1842 - 1908), leases (1674 - 1681), mortgages (1767 - 1840), road returns (1709 - 1837), and surveys (1742 - 1907). It also contains originals and copies of the Shrewsbury Township Poor Records (1749 - 1842), Shrewsbury Township Records (1775 - 1845), and Eatontown Committee Records (1818 - 1823). The MCHA Archives also has the Shrewsbury Township Town Book, 1743 - 1849, on microfilm.
