INTRODUCTION

Louise Hartshorne (1866 - 1956) was born in Astoria, New York. Miss Hartshorne was a genealogist, family historian, and collector of family papers. She lived in Monmouth County for many years and died in Middletown, New Jersey.

This collection contains personal papers of various Conover, Hartshorne, Hendrickson, Schureman, and Wikoff family members. Documents include letters, financial records, legal records, business papers, estate papers, literary productions, and printed material. The bulk dates of the collection are from 1800 to 1900. A brief history of the family relationships is described below.

John Covenhoven (1734 - 1803) of Freehold, NJ married Eleanor Wikoff (1737 - 1793). Their son, Col. Elias Conover (1757 - 1820) married Anne Fish (1761 - 1821). Their daughter, Julia Anne Conover (1781 - 1834) married Rev. John Schureman in 1802. Their children were: Julia Anne (1804 - 1889), Eleanor Williamson (b. 1806), Louisa Mercer (1807 - 1851) who married George Harrison Wikoff (b. 1806), James (1810 - 1811), Martha Wikoff (1812 - 1862) who married Charles Clarkson, John (1818 - c. 1821), and an infant.

Rev. John Schureman was born in New Brunswick, NJ and graduated from Queen's College (Rutgers University) in 1795. He studied theology in New York and was licensed in 1801. He was pastor at Bedminster, NJ (1801 - 1807), Hillsborough Church in Millstone, NJ (1807 - 1809), Collegiate Church in New York (1809 - 1811), and New Brunswick Church (1813 - 1815). He was also a Queen's College trustee (1800 - 1818), Vice-President (1811 - 1818), and faculty member (1813 - 1818).

Daniel Hendrickson (1735 - 1809) of Monmouth County married Eleanor Van Mater (1735 - 1828) in 1758. Their children were: Anna (1761 - 1798) who married Charles DuBois, Cyrenious (1766 - 1793), and John (1773 - 1807). John Hendrickson married Mary Lloyd (1772 - 1865) in 1793. Their children were: Eleanor (1794 - 1825) who married William Van Deusen, Daniel I. (1797 - 1845) who married Margaret E. Smith, Eliza Ann (1798 - 1801), John Lloyd (1801 - 1845) who married Adaline E. Crawford, Cyrenious (1803 - 1804), and Charles I. (1805 - 1889).

Charles I. Hendrickson married Julia Anne Schureman in 1826. She was the daughter of Rev. John Schureman and Julia Anne Conover. Their children were: Julia Conover (1832 - 1848), Mary Matilda (1835 - 1893), John Schureman (b. 1837) who married Jeannie S. Harris, Louisa Wikoff (1839 - 1876), and Ella (b. 1846). Charles I. Hendrickson was a merchant. Between 1830 and 1831, he had a family home built in Middletown Village which was called Locustwood. From 1837 to 1857, he was a rug merchant for A. McCallum & Company in Philadelphia.

Louisa Wikoff Hendrickson married Edward Minturn Hartshorne (1837 - 1886) in 1864. He was the son of Robert Hartshorne (1798 - 1872) and Mary Ann Minturn (1802 - 1861), and was a businessman in New York and New Jersey. Their children were: Robert (1864 - 1865), Luoise (1866 - 1956), Charles Hendrickson (1867 - 1868), Susannah Pelletreau (b. 1870), William (b. 1872), Benjamin Minturn (1873 - 1902), and Edward (b. 1875). Their daughter, Louise, was the collector of these papers.

PROVENANCE: Acquired between 1932 and 1956, a gift of Miss Louise Hartshorne, Middletown, NJ. The last group of papers were received after Miss Hartshorne's death through her niece, Mrs. William Gamwell, Middletown, NJ.

Series Description

The Louise Hartshorne Collection is arranged first by generation, then by individual person.

1. John Covenhoven (1734 - 1803)
Papers, 1778 - 1797.
Arranged chronologically.

Series contains a letter to Elias Boudinot, deeds between Covenhoven and Elias Conover and between Covenhoven and Obadiah Bowne, and a survey of Covenhoven's land sold to Sarah Vanely.

2. Col. Elias Conover (1767 - 1820)

Series contains a survey, statements of dividends paid on stock certificates, and a letter pertaining to stocks.

3. Julia Anne Conover Schureman (1781 - 1834).

Series contains incoming personal letters, legal and financial records, and records of estate administrator. Correspondents include: niece Catharine, Anne Fish Conover, AK Fish, N Fish, G Moore, Jane Conover, and Peter Wikoff. One outgoing letter is to Jacob C. Wikoff. legal and financial records include receipts, deeds, and a power of attorney to Charles I. Hendrickson. Estate papers include transactions by administrator, Charles I. Hendrickson, and include an estate inventory.

4. Rev. John Schureman (1778 - 1818)

Series contains legal and financial records, and estate papers. Legal documents contain deeds. Financial documents contain stock certificates. Estate papers include an 1818 obituary notice from The Evangelical Guardian and Review, estate inventories, letters of administration to Julia Anne Conover Schureman and Charles I. Hendrickson, vendue announcement, and account of sale at vendue.

Ridgeway, Clemence Stephens, Eleanor Hendrickson Van Deusen, Joanna Van Deusen, Mary Lloyd Van Deusen, and William Van Deusen. Legal documents include a deed, a release, and an 1868 copy of her will. The financial documents in the business papers record Hendrickson's business (and some personal ) transactions; his activities with Nathaniel S. Wikoff; his activities with brother-in-law Charles Clarkson; and records of the building of Locustwood in Middletown. Business correspondents to Hendrickson & Clarkson included; William Watt, Charles I. Hendrickson, Alexander Watson, James March, Guy C. Hotchkiss, Charles S. Wikoff, Cornelus Grinnell to Richard Hartshorne, EA Bohle to Mary, George H. ("Had") Wikoff to Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Cox Wikoff, John W. Benne to W. Hendrickson, Belle to the girls, Louise Wikoff Hendrickson to Mrs. Joseph D. Taylor, Kittie Weills to Mrs. L. & Family, Edward H. Coates to Charles Francis Gurnney, an unidentified valentie card, a valentine from Mary Lufbury, and Charles Clarkson to George H. Wikoff. Financial records include Franklin Academy stock, accounts, reciepts, an inventory, and an unidentified ledger. Legal documents include a summons, judements, Henry Wikoff's passport, and a mortgage. The US Sanitary Commission file contains the records of the Middletown Chapter in which several Hendrickson women were active. Literary productions include poetry, an unidentified diary, and hymns. The printed material includes a variety of material that has Hartshorne, Hendrickson, and Wikoff associations.

SIGNIFICANCE OF COLLECTION AND RELATED MATERIALS

The Louise Hartshorne Collection will be of interest to genealogists and family historians of the Conover, Hartshorne, Hendrickson, Schureman, and Wikoff families. Social historians will find the collection useful for the study of 18th and 19th century Monmouth County lifestyles. The business papers will be useful to economic historians. Other subjects documented in the collection include the US Sanitary Commission and 18th and 19th century poetry.

Collections housed at the Monmouth County Historical Association Library that relate to this collection include the James Wall Schureman Letters (1841 - 1848, 1909), the Hartshorne Family Papers (1771 - 1954), the Hartshorne Family Papers II (1664 - 1915), and the Joseph Hartshorne Genealogical Collection (1852 - 1918). The Monmouth County Historical Association museum collections contain many significant objects with Hartshorne, Hendrickson, and Wikoff family history which were donated by Louise Hartshorne. Related collections housed elsewhere in New Jersey include: the Hendrickson Family Papers, the Van Kouwenhoven - Conover Family Papers, the James Schureman Papers, and the John Schureman Papers located at Rutgers University Library in New Brunswick, and the Holmes Family Papers located at the New Jersey Historical Society in Newark.
