Jessica's First CC Experience
It was a warm sunday in the spring of 1993 around three o'clock. Of
course I had put the compsition and typing of the paper off until the
last minute, but I had read the book and done the research. All I had to
do was write. But something unexplainable was preventing the words from
flowing through my hands and onto the page. I went nuts. Writers' block.
The worst curse of any writer and English student. We, that is my mom
and I had to do some shopping anyway, so I thought that maybe a short
trip out of the house would do both my brain and my body some good. As I
slouched in the front seat, frustrated, I flipped on the radio and
listened intently to the sounds that poured forth from the speakers. To
my surprise, a few familiar words bounced out of the radio and entered
into the depths of my brain. Only, this was the first time I had heard
this song. "And that was the Counting Crows with Rain King," the
announcer mentioned. I sat there in the plush seat in disbelief. "It
can't be!" I thought. The book report I was doing was on Henderson the
Rain King by Saul Bellows and the song fit perfectly with what I had
been reading and researching for the past few weeks. The day I typed the
research paper for Henderson the Rain King was the day I first heard
Rain King. I turned the paper in the next day, satisfied with what I had
written and still in disbelief because of the odd occurrence the
previous day. I continued to listen to the radio, eagerly awaiting the
next treasure from the Counting Crows and not once dissapointed. I got a
B on the paper and became a Counting Crows fanatic.
