Who Makes Dishwashers for the U.S.? In 1997, Consumers Union issued ratings for 19 models of dishwashers available throughout the U.S. The dishwashers were of 10 different brands, which seems like a large variety of makers to choose from. However, these 10 brands (and many others) are made by just 5 companies! Amana . . . . . . . Amana Corporation, Amana, Iowa (owned by Raytheon Corp.) Frigidaire . . . . . White Corporation, Cleveland, O. G.E. . . . . . . . . General Electric Corporation, Fairfield, Conn. Hotpoint . . . . . . General Electric Corporation Kenmore . . . . . . Whirlpool Corporation, Benton Harbor, Mich. (for Sears) KitchenAid . . . . . Whirlpool Corporation (high-priced line; acquired 1986) Magic Chef . . . . . Maytag Corporation, Newton, Iowa Maytag . . . . . . . Maytag Corporation Whirlpool . . . . . Whirlpool Corporation White-Westinghouse . White Corporation Amana also makes Caloric, Modern Maid, and Speed Queen. G.E. also makes R.C.A. Maytag also makes Admiral and Jenn-Air. Whirlpool also makes Roper (low-priced line; since 1988) and Estate (institutional line; since 1990). White-Westinghouse also makes Gibson, Kelvinator, and Tappan. (Although Whirlpool used to be sold as "R.C.A. Whirlpool," Whirlpool was never owned by R.C.A. It used the name with R.C.A.'s permission after acquiring R.C.A.'s old Estate division.) I am indebted to Barnes Applicance Outlet for pointing out this multi- plicity of brands by a few companies.
