The Crucible Assignment

Dr. G's Crucible Assignment
Due Date: January 2, 2000

The assignments on this page do not need to be complete all at once.  You have two weeks to read, search, think and answer.  It is important that the e-mails be given proper "subject headings."   This will make my sorting of your assignments easier.

This assignment has been designed to make you think and evaluate.  There are not long essays to be completed, only short answers.   (Remember!  Longer is not always better.)  Hopefully you will even have some fun completing the work.

Part I.

Go to National Geographic's Web page on the Salem Witch Hysteria.  Click on the graphic below to get there.   Make sure that you experience the trials, plus read all of the related information links about the historical counterparts of Miller's Crucible (Any of this information can be used on your test in January).  Print out info or take notes.

When you are done, go to my National Geographic Evaluation Form.  You might want to check out this form before going to the site so you are better prepared to answer questions.

Part II:

The following questions will be answered on the attached form

In Salem a court of Court of Oyer and Terminer was set up.  Find what the words Oyer and Terminer mean?  Find the definition and tell me the method you located the information.

Part III

Read through the actual trial transcripts of GB (his real name is never given). For what reasons was GB brought to trial? What was his crime? Give 3 "proofs" that were used against him.  What was his  punishment?  Who is the person in charge?  What do you know about him?

Part IV

Read through Pagan Tea House: Part IV Gallows Hill.   How many villages, in addition to Salem, were caught up in the Witch Hunt Hysteria?  What are some of the reasons historians give for the end of the Salem Witch Trials?

Part V

A quantitative look at witchcraft in the 17th century New England.  Look at the statistics on this page.  What conclusion can you draw?

Part VI

Read through the FAQ from the Salem Witch Museum.  If you have a question for the web manager there, ask it and see if you get a reply.  Three questions from here will be on your test.

Part VII

Bridget Bishops' death warrant is the only one that exists today.    Also, the exact site of the executions is not know, although it is thought to be Gallows Hill.  Do your own thinking to figure out why other death warrants no longer exist and why the site of the executions is uncertain.

Part VIII

For review, go the the following sites and take a quiz.  The quiz is for review only.  There are no grades attached.

Multiple Choice  Identify the speakers

Some more good sources:

Rev. Samuel Parris: Undated Miniature Portrait
A color scan of the only portrait known to exist of Rev. Samuel Parris of Salem Village, at the center of the witchcraft hysteria.

The Salem Witchcraft Trials by Doug Lindner
This site is so chock full of transcripts of the primary sources -- depositions, warrants, letters, petitions -- you really have to go and explore it for yourself! There are images, including portraits of Samuel Sewall, William Stoughton, William Phips, and Cotton Mather. The brief biographies of various participants are excellent!
