How To Get There Location 4th Avenue at Ocean Blvd. Belmar, NJ 07719 Driving: From the Newark airport, take the New Jersey Turnpike South. Turn off at exit 11, Garden State Parkway, and go South. Turn off at exit 98, "Belmar, Spring Lake", to Belmar. Go right on 5th Street to Ocean. Parking: Belmar attracts a decent crowd. Its a larger stop on the tour. There's also a large beach crowd so parking can get a little tight if you don't get there early enough. There are meters along the beach and additional street parking as you move away from the beach all the way down to main street (if you do park on the side streets make sure it is in a legal space) As for motels I know there are a few in Belmar and the surrounding areas but there are also a lot of B&Bs in Spring Lake and Sea Girt, the next two towns down.
Beach Badges Mandatory: You must purchase a beach badge before purchasing your Tickets to the Belmar AVP Event. Badges are available for each day of the event right on the boardwalk on 5th street in booths at the entrance to the event. The cost is an extra $5 daily in addition to the General AVP Admission..

Articles 2004:
Back to Belmar By Doug Strauss July 7, 2004 Returning to action after a month-long hiatus, the 2004 AVP Nissan Series continues in Belmar, N.J. with its seventh stop of the year at the July 8-11 Belmar Open presented by Bud Light. The women's championship is being broadcast live on NBC-TV on Saturday, and that changes the men's main draw to a three-day event. Both genders are coming off three-straight FIVB tournaments which helped finalize the spots for the Olympic beach teams. Sean Rosenthal / Larry Witt are the defending champs, as they won their first event last season while playing together for just the fifth time. In that match they defeated Matt Fuerbringer / Casey Jennings, who finished second for the fourth time in the first five events last year. Those two teams have amassed more finish points since the start of 2003 than any other teams, as between them they have two wins, eight second-place finishes and three thirds in the 15 events during that span. The men have played in Belmar each year since 1991, making this the 14th event held there. Karch Kiraly won the first three titles, then added another in 1996. Mike Whitmarsh won four straight years (1997-2000) with three different partners, and again claimed the crown in 2002 with Canyon Ceman. With Brian Lewis' victory in 1995 and Brent Doble's in 2001, only the 1994 event was won by at least one player who is not currently playing on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. While the first five events this season were won by five different teams, Kiraly / Mike Lambert were the first to repeat as winners by taking the title in the last outing in San Diego. Kiraly / Lambert have established themselves as the team to beat, as they have now won their last 12 matches, the longest of the season on the men's side. In those 12 wins, however, they have been pushed to a third game six times. Their three finals appearances equals that of Rosenthal / Witt, who have to shake their let-downs after championship matches. In the tournaments following finals featuring Rosenthal / Witt, the duo has placed seventh, 17th, seventh, and a "to be determined" as they were in the finals in San Diego. The men's field is bolstered by the return of the players who were competing overseas in order to gain a berth to the Olympics in Athens. Dain Blanton / Jeff Nygaard, who occupy one of the two spots on the U.S. Olympic team, have placed third in their last three AVP tournaments, but had to miss the San Diego contest to play on the FIVB Tour. Dax Holdren / Stein Metzger, who have earned the other Olympic berth, finished third in Austin, Texas, which was their last AVP event. Those teams will also be joined by Todd Rogers / Sean Scott, who have been playing overseas as well. That duo has a first, second and third place finish in their three AVP competitions this season. Missing however, will be Jason Ring / George Roumain, one of the five different winners this season. Ring had to pull out while he mends a broken hand. On the women's injury report is Misty May, whose pulled abdominal muscle will keep her from playing this weekend. Belmar has hosted four women's events; in 1993-94 and 2002-03, and four different teams have won titles. Holly McPeak won the 1993 and 2002 events, the latter with Elaine Youngs, while Kerri Walsh and Misty May won last year. However, due to May's injury Walsh is playing her first event with Jennifer Meredith. Last week Walsh played an FIVB event with Rachel Wacholder, marking the first time those two had ever played together, and they placed third. McPeak has stretched her record number of titles to 70 by logging four wins the last six weeks, including two on the international circuit. Those victories helped seal their spot as the second U.S. team to qualify for the Athens Olympics; May / Walsh had already locked up one berth. McPeak / Youngs have won 11 straight matches on the AVP Tour in claiming the last two championships. In doing so, they have only lost two games, both to Annett Davis / Jenny Johnson Jordan, who have finished second in the last three AVP events they have competed in. There is an exclusive list of teams who have advanced to semifinals this season. Carrie Busch / Nancy Mason have placed third four times, including the last three straight. Barbra Fontana / Jennifer Kessy have been to a pair of Final Fours, highlighted by their second-place finish in Huntington Beach, Calif. Lisa Arce / Leanne McSorley (two semifinal appearances) and Angie Akers / Wacholder (one Final Four) round out the small list of teams that have placed in the top three this year. The Belmar Open presented by Bud Light marks the first of five events on NBC. On July 24 and 25 both the men's and women's championships are being televised live from Hermosa Beach, Calif. Fuerbringer/Jennings and McPeak/Youngs victorious in Belmar By Doug Strauss July 13, 2004 Holly McPeak, who pushed her career victory record to 71 wins, and Elaine Youngs claimed the women's title, but it was Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings who won the hearts of the fans in claiming their first ever tournament victory. The Belmar Open presented by Bud Light was full of emotions, spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd watching the first NBC telecast of the season. Matt Fuerbringer (pictured) and partner Casey Jennings win first career victory at the AVP Belmar Open presented by Bud Light Jennings celebrated his 29th birthday during the tournament, but it will pale compared to the partying following his first win. Fuerbringer / Jennings had played in six other finals in the last two years, but each time had come up short. They were facing their sixth different opponent in the finals, but their four matches on Saturday and Sunday must have given them feelings of deja-vu, as they happened against two different foes. "We beat two teams twice in this tournament and that's not easy to do", Jennings said. "The difference is we were hungrier today." First they eliminated Sean Rosenthal / Larry Witt by beating them twice, then had their second match-up of the day with Jake Gibb / Adam Jewell in the finals. Early in the first game serves went evenly to Gibb and Jewell, but Jewell didn't have his usual spring in his step due to cramps as the heat on the sand reached 120 degrees. "Adam cramped up but he battled through it it shows his heart," Gibb said of his partner. "He is one of the best jumpers on the tour but he could barely jump." Trailing 8-7, Fuerbringer / Jennings noticed that Jewell was hurting and took advantage of it by serving every remaining balls to him, forcing him to move and jump more than he wanted to. Fuerbringer logged five blocks in the first game as his team took a 21-14 win. In the second game, as Jewell re-hydrated he started to get his legs back somewhat, and was able to chase down seven digs but was still forced to take every serve. Fuerbringer / Jennings had leads of 18-14 and 20-16, but had to sweat out three unsuccessful match points before Fuerbringer's kill sealed the match. "He did a great job, he caught fire in the first game," Jennings said of his partner Fuerbringer. "You have to get after them in rally scoring. Those leads give you confidence even when you give some points back." In playing to get into the Final Four, Karch Kiraly / Mike Lambert had a 20-17 lead in game one against Dain Blanton / Jeff Nygaard when Kiraly went down with a shoulder injury that required an injury timeout. While he will have his shoulder examined to determine if surgery is necessary, he managed not only to close out that match, but also to push Gibb / Jewell to three games in the semifinal match-up. "That was the most impressive performance I have ever seen on a volleyball court," Gibb said of Kiraly's play while injured. "He switched sides and was playing with one arm. I was in awe but I thought I have to beat these guys.'" Another team that was one match away from the semifinals was 10th-seeded Paul Baxter / Scott Wong, who defeated the elder Wong team of Eric Fonoimoana / Kevin Wong. Brent Doble had to withdraw at the last minute due to an injury, but Brian Lewis picked up Scott Ayakatubby and they placed seventh. An injury on the women's side changed the look of the top teams as well, as Misty May's pulled abdominal muscle kept her from playing again, so Kerri Walsh picked up Jennifer Meredith. Seeded sixth, it marked the first time since 2001 that Walsh was not either a No. 1 or 2 seed in any tournament she played in. Playing for the first time together, the duo looked impressive in advancing to the finals without dropping a single game. Holly McPeak / Elaine Youngs entered this tournament having won back-to-back AVP titles as well as two FIVB victories in the last six weeks. McPeak, who went nearly a full year without a victory after pulling to within one win of the all-time career wins record, has now broke out with five wins in her last seven outings. "This was our plan at the beginning of the year, to peak around July and August," McPeak said. "We are consistently playing really good volleyball." They used their momentum to topple Meredith / Walsh in the Belmar championship match. McPeak picked up 12 digs in the match, and her perfect passing set up Youngs for some kills on the second hit, which kept Meredith / Walsh on their heels. "It's not easy to go over on two, it takes some work," Youngs said. "But Holly was setting me up on a platter." After winning the first game 21-18, they got a little more breathing room in the second game and won 21-15. In winning their third tournament in a row on the AVP Nissan Series, they have now won 16 straight matches and lead the season point total. The Final Four featured some familiar teams, as Annett Davis / Jenny Johnson Jordan placed third after reaching the semifinals for the sixth time in seven tourneys this season. Barbra Fontana / Jennifer Kessy also took a third after getting to the semis for the third time in the last four events. One AVP tournament remains before the domestic tour takes a break for the entire month of August as the Olympics take place in Athens. The Hermosa Beach Open presented by Bud Light will be held July 22-25, with both the men's and women's finals being broadcast live on NBC.

The Boys are Back in Belmar!!! Courtesy of the AVP Jul 21,2000 Saturday at the Sunkist Belmar AVP Open was not a good day for the AVP’s elite. The only top four seeded team surviving in the winners bracket after Saturday’s play was the 4th seeded squad of Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh who advanced to the semifinals with a convincing 15-4 win over Brian Lewis and Adam Johnson. Also slipping into the wrong bracket on day 1 was top seeds Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers who fell victim to Brazilians Anjinho and Fred 15-12. The fourth installment of the LeGrande/Neto vs. Doble/Metzger saga was played out here in Belmar, with Doble/Metzger squaring the season series to two games a piece with a 15-12 win and a place in the semis on Sunday. Belmar marked the return of Eric Fonoimoana and Dain Blanton to the AVP Tour after a few weeks playing abroad on the FIVB’s Olympic chase. Dain and Eric were not treated kindly by Nick Hannemann and Adam Jewell who sent the pair to the losers bracket with a 15-7 victory.

Sunday was again no picnic on the court for the top seeds at the Sunkist AVP Belmar Open. The top seeded team of Dax Holdren and Todd Rogers managed only one victory in the losers bracket on Sunday, narrowly beating Brent Frohoff and Larry Witt 16-14. Their run ended in the next match as Brian Lewis and Adam Johnson advanced with a 15-12 victory over last weeks champions, giving them a 7th place finish in Belmar. The #2 seeded team of Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana also found themselves making an early exit on Sunday as they also finished in 7th place after being eliminated from the tournament by LeGrande and Neto 15-13. The victory for #3 seeds LeGrande and Neto would be their last as Eduardo Bacil and Fred Souza would send them packing with a 15-7 defeat and a 5th place finish. On the winners side it was the #4 seeded team of Mike Whitmarsh and Canyon Ceman who were in control of the tournament after winning the winners finals over the surprise team of the weekend, #10 seeds Adam Jewell and Nick Hannemann. Jewell/Hannemann notched victories over Fonoi/Blanton in the quarters and Doble/Metzger in the semis, before going down to Ceman/Whit in the winners finals by a score of 15-9. During the match, Mike Whitmarsh rolled his ankle, but was a
