Swedish Surprise in Main Draw, Stavanger-07-Jul-2001 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Title: Phillips Open Location: Norway - Stavanger - in Vågen Late: July 4th through July 8th 2001, Men´s competition Prize money: US $ 180.000
Bjørn Berg and Simon Dahl, the Swedish No. 1 team, are unbeaten after two rounds in the Main Draw of the Phillips Open 2001 in Stavanger, Norway. The two wins by the Swedes was the biggest surprise on another fantastic day in Vågen Harbour. Not only has it been beach volley of the highest level throughout the competition, it has also proven how close the main draw teams are in standard, and how quickly potential victories can be turned into defeats. Berg and Dahl, seeded 22nd in the competition, made it through to the winners bracket third round with hard fought victories over Loiola/Ricardo from Brazil in their first match, 2-0 (21-15, 21-18), and the Olympic Champions Blanton/Fonomoiana, USA in their second, 2-1 (21-15, 12-21, 20-18). Surprisingly Loiola/Ricardo of Brazil have suffered two losses and have been eliminated from the competition for a final finish of 17th place. The other major surprise of the day occurred when the Japanese team of Watanabe/Shiratori defeated the Gstaad , Switzerland Champions Wong/Metzger, USA, in the first round. The Japan team are competing in the main draw for the very first time. The other 7 teams who will join the Swedes in the third round winners bracket are : Emanuel/Tande, Brazil, Ze Marco/Para, Brazil, Smith/Henkel, USA, Child/Heese, Canada, Oetke/Scheuerpluf, Germany, Kjemperud/Høidalen, Norway and Laciga/Laciga, Switzerland. For the Norwegian fans the most enthralling match of the day was between old teammates, Bjørn Maaseide and Jan Kvalheim, and their new partners in the first round. It was a fight that thrilled the capacity crowd and was played with plenty of emotion being shown by both players. Maaseide/Horrem eventually won the match 2-0 and after a loss and a victory they will be playing in tomorrows losers bracket third round for a chance to continue through to Sundays finals. The competition continues tomorrow at 10 a.m on four courts. In the other semifinal the Laciga-brothers from Switzerland will play Child/Heese from Canada for the second spot in the gold medal match. Emanuel/Tande was the first team to reach the semi final with victories over Ze Marco/Para and Child/Heese in their two matches today. Martin and Paul Laciga defeated Kjemperud/Høidalen of Norway in their first game today, and then received a walk over to the semifinal due to an knee injury to Oetke of Germany, who was unable to play the winners bracket semi final. Norwegian team Kjemperud/Høidalen received great support from the home crowd, but fell at the last hurdle and were defeated by Child/Heese for the last semi final spot. An enthusiastic crowd, who filled the stadion to capasity all day, cheered on the players from all countries, and even stayed to cheer on Kjemperud/Høidalen when rain threatened to delay play. The first semi final will commence tomorrow at 12 noon with the bronze medal play off scheduled for 2.30 p.m, with the gold medal match to follow immediately after, in the presence of HRH Princess Mãrtha Louise of Norway. Emanuel and Tande win again in Stavanger-08-Jul-2001 Led by tournament best player, Emanuel, the Brazilian combination Emanuel/Tande dominated the finals in Stavanger, Norway defeating the Laciga-brothers from Switzerland 2-0 (21-19,21-15) in the gold medal match. The Brazilians dominated the tournament going through undefeated. So dominate was their performance that they only lost one set in three days of competition. Early in the day they gave advanced notice of the great form that they were in, by defeating compatriots Ze Marco/Para in the semi final to advance directly to the gold medal game. Paul and Martin Laciga although galant in defeat, have now competed in every final this season, but are still to taste victory. An easy victory in the semi final over Child/Heese of Canada did not translate into a gold medal winning performance in the final. Ze Marco/Para of Brazil recovered from their earlier semi final loss to defeat Child/Heese in a match played in sunshine after both semi finals were played in light rain. The capacity crowd of 3500 spectators were however not detered from enjoing some great beach volleyball.
