I am currently selling a number of drum corps albums from the 60s on eBay. I have an album
the Musketeers
recorded on the Somerset label in the early 60s, possibly 1962. Rather than putting it up
for bid, I thought I
should offer it for sale to a member of the alumni corps. Price is just $5 plus $3.20 for
priority shipping.

Hello All! I remember growing up in South Philadelphia and hearing my older brother always
practicing on his
drum pad. I really thought that was the greatest sound I had ever heard. One day he asked
if I would like to go
to rehearsal and hear the real thing, well that was it I was hooked. There is no sound
like the sound of a Drum
and Bugle Corp especially when it's Archer Epler. I must say that when I came across this
site tears started to
flow down my cheeks. It just brought back the best memories of my life. That was 40 years
ago and to this day I
can still hear "Tonight" from West Side Story and picture the corp marching down
Market Street in Philly. By
the way that older brother was Joel Leson. Does anyone remember him? Thanks for having
this wonderful site,

It was good speaking with Jimmy McConkey this past weekend. Jimmy appears to have a
photographic
memory and is a walking drum and bugle corps encyclopaedia. During our conversation there
was one thing
on which we both agreed: these "brass bands" that call themselves drum and bugle
corps and whose music is
so far out in "La La Land" that it makes you wonder what in the world they are
playing, are not our idea of what
our hobby was, nor should be! Folks a three pistoned horn is a trumpet, not a bugle. We
find these types of
instruments in college bands and in those musical groups who play in gazebos on the town
square, on Sunday
afternoons. A bugle used to be a horn that challenged its owner to make great music
without him or her having
to become a trumpet player. The American Flag, color guards that brought us real color
presentations, and the
patriotism and spirit that came with them; that was, and should remain, what drum and bugle
corps are about.
Give me an ol' fashioned night of corps with Archie, Reilly, Hawthorne, the Yankee Rebels,
and the Skyliners
playing those great songs we all still remember, and that, sports fans, is drum and bugle
corps!! I know much
has been said and written about this, and I'd be curious to know what anyone else out
there thinks. As for me, I
can't sit through a DCI show on PBS and call that "stuff" drum corps. When I
want to see a really good
marching band, I drive over to Harrisonburg, VA., and watch the James Madison University
"Royal Dukes".
They play understandable and enjoyable music and don't pretend to be anything but what
they are.Regards to
all. Joel.

Archie's "Brass Reunion" was something to see and hear! If I was judging the
show for GE and overall
execution that night, I'd have to give it to the guys and gals in the gold, black and
white----yep, The Blessed
Sacrament "Golden Knights" are back with that repertoire that always grabbed the
fans right out of the stands.
But yo, this is alumni corps, and the Kelly Green of Reilly, Archie's famous red and
black, the Yankee Rebels
new uniforms and their great "Songs of the South," were entertaining, in every
sense of the word. Seeing Vince
Deegan, Kenny Newman, Whitey Roberts, Harry Welsh, Rip Bernert, Mark Fulcomer, and shaking
Jack
Keely's hand, made the reunion everything I hoped it would be. (Jack and Joanne Keeley are
two great and
courageous people!!) Meeting with Vic, Joe and Richie Marrella, the core of Vasella
"Musketeers" Junior
Corps, was certainly another highlight of the night. The best to the Archie Family. Keep
up the outstanding
work! See you at the GAS Reunion.

Just wanted to say thank you for having us at your show in Drexel. This was our first
alumni alumni show by the
corps. Everyone in the corps had a great time. I saw friends from other corps that i
hadn't seen in 20 years. It
was a great reunion. Philadelphia gave us a great reception. Keep the alumni shows going
folks. Its the best
thing that could ever happen for us folks that just don't have enough time to do field
again. Thanks Musketeers
for a great concert and party afterward. We are hoping to have a show in the near future
in Pittsburg and would
like to see all the corps join us for an exciting evening. By the way the corps rendition
of "The Musketeer song"

of us who grew up
with drum corp, one went to hawthorne, one went to the reb's( god bless his soul) and I
stayed home in albion

my eyes.Even
though Ive played with Joes and others doesnt mean that we arent your fans also. Its good

So that is what a GAS Reunion is all about! Or, as the Venerable Matador Conductor of the
"Hot Tamales,"
Tommy Swann observed, "Pay attention, this is Serious S__t!!!" Seriously though,
congratulations to everyone
in Archie and the Bon Bons for sponsoring such a fantastic reunion, and thanks to Jim
Cossetti for coming up
with the GAS Reunion idea. When those 17 Corps members wearing their corps' uniforms
marched up on the
stage at the banquet, you could see the pride and feeling of accomplishment that Jim had.
Way to go Jim!
When the choruses sang the National Anthems of our two great countries I don't think any
of us could be
prouder of what Drum Corps are all about. And finally, joining the "Vince Deegan
Chorus," as in years of old, in
the hospitality suite, was as good as it gets! Thanks again for a truly great weekend!

Did he always wear mirrors? What fun it was to play for all of those great conductors!
Congrats to Eileen Snow

Greeting Fellow Drum and Bugles Corps Folks, As the crowd used to yell out as Archie
performed that great
number, "April In Paris," I'd like to ask a favor of a group of my fellow corps
members of years past who read
this website by asking for their attention, "ONE MORE TIME!" This is a personal
appeal for the members of the
World Drum Corps Hall of Fame (WDCHOF) to consider voting for Jimmy McConkey for induction
into the Hall
this year. As Carol Terreri pointed out during Archie's presentation at this year's GAS
Reunion, Jimmy
McConkey has drum corps credentials as a drum major that are unmatched by anyone in our
hobby who has
"fronted" a junior or senior drum corps. He has led seven different corps to
national titles in the United States
and Canada. He marched with our legendary corps, and made them better outfits in every
sense of the word.
He was the consummate showman, year in and year out. When I was a member of the Vasella
"Musketeers,"
Jimmy came down from Blessed Sacrament to lead our "big brothers" of
Archer-Epler. Never "full of himself,"
Jimmy would join us at the Vasella American Legion Post and coach, mentor and cajole us to
improve our
show. He knew drum corps to a level that many of us never fathomed or ever attained. For
all that he has
contributed to the world of drum and bugle corps I, as a journeyman corps member of many
years ago,
respectfully ask the renowned men and woman of the WDCHOF who can vote in this year's
balloting, to vote
for Jimmy to join their ranks. I, and many who believe as I do, would be very grateful for
your making this
happen! JIMMY HAS PAID HIS DUES....IT IS TIME THOSE WHO REPRESENT ALL OF US JOURNEYMEN
CORPS MEMBERS IN THE WDCHOF ASSIST US IN PAYING OURS!!!! My sincere thanks for your
consideration, and hopefully your vote. Joel. NAME: Mike O'Neill

Jack Warner....he will never be forgotten...I don't know why he's not in the Archie Hall
of Fame! His was the
voice that I listened to when I first joined the corps in l958... following practice I
really didn't know what to
expect...everybody seemed to gather aroung Jack at the bar and the strains of "If I
Loved You" filled the
room...and there was Jack...his voice so beautiful leading the rest us. And that's the way
it was week after
week, year after year. Later on, after becoming an on-air announcer at a classical music
radio station in Miami,
I searched our archives and found many, many recordings of the Masterworks chorus in New
York And, there
he was... Jack Warner!! Not remember Jack Warner... not a chance!

Some sad news to all who do not already know. Charlie Lobb passed away on Thursday,
October 12th, 2000.
Charlie suffered from lung cancer for a little over a year. We are all so grateful that he
did not suffer too long at
the end. To all who were so faithful throughout Joan and her family are ever so grateful.
You have all truly been a
"MUSKETEER" and we are so pleased that we are part of the "Archie"
Family. Take care and God Bless.

Too much sad news anymore. Charlie was always one of the good guys. I also just found out
of the passing of
Jack Keeley. Jack was a long time friend and will be fondly remembered. I can just see him
now, whereever he
is, jumping in the air, clicking his heels together and singing " A little gin, a
little beer, what the hell I'm a

To the Archer-Epler family:
Thank you so much for a great 4 years as the Percussion Instructor /Arranger. I truly
enjoyed the opportunity.
Speaking for myself, and I think Bert will agree, we will really miss doing this for
Archie. I am unable to attend
the Open House, due to the date change and my ROTC committments, but look forward to
seeing all of you at
the next rehersal. I hope all are looking forward to the next season and another year of

Mark, It was an honor to be asked to say a few words about Jack during the presentation of
the American Flag

I've just stumbled across all of these wonderful websites of the drum corps I grew up with
so long ago and it's
like going back in time. I marched with the Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights back between
'63 and '65 in
the snare line. I read Jim McConkey's note about drum corps today and agree totally. It's
hard to watch it as it is
now! By the way, I still have that great studio LP you guys did with the vocal chorus.
Great stuff!
I would love to contact a former Archy drummer from the early to mid 60's. His name is Joe
O'Conner and I
haven't spoken with him for almost 40 years. Anyone know of his whereabouts and,
hopefully, e-mail address?
This is a really nice site, as are so many of the others like the one the Golden Knights
have. My thanks to those
who put the time in to develop and maintain them for the enjoyment of folks like me.

Bob Love

Hi all, enjoyed this site very much brought back a lot a great great memories from 59 and
60. I was with St
Kevins Emerald Knights for 5 years than 2 years in the Army than what else but Norman
Prince (Princemen).
Remember much travel, much fun, a lot of beer, and great compititions. always have the
memory of the
Musketeers and the dipsy doodle but special memory of the renditon of 'MARGIE' it was
great. Also remember
the sound of the Bass drum it was tuned so that it made a sound like no other bass drum I
have ever heard-
fantastic. I played tenor drum with Prince and can still remember one compitition (don't
know where) where
Archie was on the field, Hawthorne on the Ready line, the Princemen, on the Inspection
Line, and Reilly forming
up to come right behind us. What a feeling of emotion to be part of these great drum
corps. I went to a contest
in Boston about 6 years ago and although I enjoyed the music I can honestly say that I
didn't really appreciate
the new style of non military lines, etc. It just doesn't seem the same to me. When the
Corps of the 50's and
60's hit the field they were more military than the military, they put on great
shows,great music, drum lines that
were fantasic, and they did this with one valve horns and only snare, tenor, bass drums,
and cymbols. Would
love to see this type of Drum Corps come back but I don't think it will happen. NAME:

I am a former Geneva Appleknocker (junior corps 1965-1973). I just wanted to let you know
that one of my
all-time favorite drum corps recordings is Archie at the 1964 World Open (as recorded by
Fleetwood). Who
were those magnificent triple tonguing soprano soloists? Were they ringers (pros) in for
the show or long term
members? Their brass technique is out of this world. They certainly set a high standard of
excellence which I
strove to emulate during my years in drum corps. I also have a picture of Archie (1959
Preview of Champions
at Roosevelt Stadium I believe) from the personal collection of an old Sr.Appleknocker

There are no friends like the old friends. They leave us with so many happy memories. It
is with sadness that I
inform you that another long time member of Archer Epler Junior Corp and Alumini Committee
member Ann
(Hansel) Newton passed away November 13th at her daughter Carol's home in New Jersey. Ann
was the
daughter of Lou Hansel, wife of Bert Newton and sister of Cass Deegan and Jimmy Hansel.
She was a drum
major in Upper Darby #214 and transferred to Archie where she performed as a drum major
and helped to
bring back many awards and honors to our own Junior Corps. Both Ann and Bert contributed
many memories
to the History of Archie as they took an active part in the Alumni Association. Their many
pictures and tapes
brought back the great flavor of the old drum corp days. Ann will be sadly missed by her
family and friends
which I am pleased to be part of that list.

Hopefully I'll be travelling with a couple of others who anticipate playing with us this
coming season, namely, Bill
Murray, a snare drum, Bill Thissen, Brinhrn and his son Bill Thissen, Jr., who'll play
snare as well. :-) Who
knows, I might even be able to talk Dave Fite into trapsing along with us,....but NO
gaurantees. :-)

2001

OK! I guess it's a new millenium, so here we go. First, whoever
Bob is...you've done a magnificent job with the
webpage. Congratulations. It was good reading comments from so many old
friends...thanks Joel for the
comments on the GAS Reunion, but it wasn't just me....GAS is a wonderful group of drum
corps folks who love
the activity and who have a sincere desire to share the past while looking to the
future. Without the friends and
comrades working in harmony to achieve the purpose of GAS it could not have been done.
I was just lucky
enough to have been the first President of GAS and I'm humbled by the success of the
organization and of the
entire Alumni Corps movement. Yes, I was proud watching the 'trooping' of theose
uniforms, both American
and Canadian. One of my fondest memories of drum corps was my first exposure to Les
Troubadors de
Quebec. Remember "Under Paris Skies"? The GAS organization has grown and
matured and I was like an
adult living vicariously through a child. We all nurtured the infant and after a four
year absence I was awed by
what I experienced. I'm saddened by the passing of so many old friends and fellow
Musketeers. My memories
of Big Jack will live on and I'll never lose my love of song, right Harry
Sharp?......and Kenny Newman...you were
right for the two sopranos that Geoff Whiting questioned......the third was Jack
Singleton, who hit and sustained
the 'G', while Ray and Dave triple tongued the 'ladder'. Thanks to Danny Fallon who now
plays better than I
could, but remember Danny....I taught you everything I never knew.......and to Mary
Zig, Louie Scirotto, Jimmy
McConkey and all of our old friends, best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year.
God bless you all and
those that have passed. Remember that Archie made Excellence a commonplace thing. I was
honored to have
been a Musketeer.

Accidentally found a link to drum and bugle corps. After over an hour's search, found
the site and opened it. A
chill ran down my spine. Browsing around brought back some of the greatest nostalgic
memories of my life.
Perusing the Guestlog, recalled many half forgotten names of fellow Musketeers , who
shared those cherished
experiences, through all the ups and downs from 1958 to 1966.
Downloading and playing the Musketeer Fanfare brought tears to my eyes. I repeated it
so many times, my
wife inquired from the kitchen , "What in hell, are you listening to." When
she came up, she immediately
recognized it. How could I ever forget the thrill of playing it full bore on the
kickoff line; closely followed by Stars
and Stripes, National Emblem, Fairest of the Fair or Under the Double Eagle? It even
inspired me to break out
my old baritone and play, until my lip turned to blubber.
I was a member of the Atlantic City commuters along with Don Laurelli, Andy and Jack
Philp, Bill Aucott, Bernie
Blum, Frank Elbertson, Bill Edwards and Moe Christ; all taught by Froggy and Toni
Mondi, who turned the
"Raggedy Ass Cadets" into a first class corps in 1949. Possibly Charlie
Dreher may be one of us, if he is the
guy, who lived in Chelsea Heights.
For several years, I marched, sandwiched between two Archie giants; Big Jack and a
contrabass, who's name
is lost in my "half-Heimer's". (It was not Whitey). Even though I only
weighed 220, we were jovially referred to as
"The Three Tons of Fun." Who could forget singing with Big Jack, at the Post
or after a contest?
Keep up the good work. Most of all, don't let the Archie tradition die.
If I can ever remember the way to Upper Darby, I hope to drop in.
To quote Bob Hope, "Thanks, for the memories."

Jack came to
several of our Alumni affairs at the Post Home. It was so nice to see her at that time

After reading through the guestbook, and reliving some very fond memories, it was with
much sadness that I
saw the message of the passing of Charlie Lobb. A true Musketeeer, and one of the first
to help me become a
Musketeer. The other of course was Tony Ferraiola (soprano).(Anyone know where he's at
now.???) I had the
pleasure of meeting them while I was stationed at the USMC ctr in Ridley Twnship, and
helping with the M&M
of the Ridley Park Rangers, (Jr,) It didn't take much to convince me to join the Colour
Guard once I saw
"Archie" at full throttle. Only a thing called Vietnam pulled me away from
Upper Darby, and when I retired from
the Marines in 1976, Drum Corps had gone from the old 'blast & brass' to whatever
the hell they call it now.
Damn, those were the days...and after reading the dci site, it's now ok(?) to play a

My name is Gary Karpinski, and I am currently the Head Drum Major with the New York
Skyliners. However, I
also consider myself a child of the Archer Epler Musketeers.
For most of my life my dad Walter(Mousie)Karpinski has talked about(as far as he is
concerned) the greatest
Drum Corps in history. ARCHIE!
I am not sure of the years he marched, I think 1958 - 1962.
Because of the stories my dad has told me over the years, and the people I met (Bill
Kauffman, Rip Bernert,
Carmen Silicione, Jack Langford, Jimmy McConkey, Vince Deegan, Whitey Roberts, Louie
Scirrotta and this
list goes on). I have been in Drum & Bugle Corps since 1977, Starting with the
Saints of Woodbridge NJ,
going on to the Bayonne Bridgemen, and for the last 14 years the New York Skyliners.
I met my wife in Drum Corps, and have 3 wonderful children, with one on the way. Most
of everything I have and
enjoy is somehow connected to Drum Corps.
What I am trying to say, it is about time I said thank to the Corps that started all
this for me.
So to everyone connected with the Archer Epler Musketeers.
Thank You.

For all of the visitors to this wonderful website... A Trip to the Twilight Zone. I was
a member of the drumline at
Archie from 1958 to 1964...I played with Walter(Mousie) Karpinski and Gary Carlton in
the tenor drum line. It
was wonderful and we were tight, not just as fellow corps members but as friends.
In either 1961 or 1962 (pardon my senior moment) Gary Carlton passed away quite
suddenly. He had been
gone from Archie for a year or so, but, he was a Musketeer. The weekend of his wake we
played Carnegie Hall
(An Evening with the Corps). Prior to the performance, our buses went to the funeral
home in Newark and we
all said goodbye to Gary.
Fast forward to the present...........

to continue................ I just read the message from Gary Karpinski regarding his
father's remembrances of the
corps when it hit me like a bolt of lightning. Mousie had named his son GARY. My oldest
son was born in 1964
and we named him GARY in honor of my friend and fellow Musketeer. So, it seems like the
bond forged
between 3 drummers in 1958 has turned out to be stronger than we could ever have
imagined. I wish to all of
you the opportunity to forge friendships that will last forever...often in ways that
are completely and totally
amazing....

I have returned to the Corps as a horn player after an absence of 37 years from Archie
and 31 years from
"Real Drum Corps". Interesting return - I was worried about my lip, my
breathing and things like that. Never
considered I couldn't see the music. I have read through all the comments in the
Guestlog and have seen many
names from the past that bring back fond memories. I'm also happy to find out that I am
not the only "old timer"
that does not think very highly of the direction Drum Corps (read DCI) has taken. Thank
the good Lord for
Alumni Corps. I have seen names of old members mentioned and I would like to add a
couple - Harry Mathias,
Al Rolick, Dean McCoy (Big Jack's Friend), there was also a snare drummer that came
down with Big Jack
anyone remember his name. For all of you who have forgotten - remember the exit from
the cemetery after a
Memorial Day Parade. It had to be in the early 60's. Our esteemed Drum Major, Jim
McConky called for South
Rampart Street Parade as we were exiting the grave yard. I don't think we ever played
it better. Log on and let
us know if you remember that small event. My first show was the Dixie Stinger this year
and was I nervous. Can
you believe that after all these years. Great web site and a great way to establish
contact after all these years.
See you all at parctice on the 20th.

Playing the horn is like riding a bicycle, you never really forget how it's done.
Archie's Dixie Stinger show was a
fine one. Terrific soloist in Scheherazade, sounded like a revival of Lee Wolf's intro'
to "Musketeers," the corps
executed everything crisply...it brought back memories of the good ol' days.!!!! Will

played with the super

me and somehow I have
gotten through it. However, it is now time for me to start taking care of myself and
unfortunately that means
cutting back on my recreation activities. I will still be around and want to be a part

I marched one season with the Musketeers, it was in 1978. I believe it was the first
time the Corps was back,
and our first show was the Dream Contest in Jersery City. I was in the rifle line. We
lined up on the goal line.
The stands were packed! We came off the line with the Musketeers March and the crowed
went completely
wild, the crowed stood for the hole show. I was in complete tears when we came off the
field! For me, that was
the greatest Drum Corps experience in my life and I'm glad to have spent that one
season with Archie!

My brother Greg Palmer is currently in your corp. My father Joseph Palmer was also a
part of the corp back in
the 50's and late 70's early 80's.

Great site Archie... My father, Charlie Hooper Sr., was a member of Archer Epler during
the late 50's. He loved
the corps. I still remember going to practice at the refinery and the corps competing
with the noise from all the
gas being burned off.. great memories. keep up the good work. I now march with the
Yankee Rebels Alumni
Corps and because of all the websites and alumni corps springing up it seems that old
drum corps is being
reborn... may it live long and prosper until the last one of us drops.

Hello, My name is Mark Breitigan and I am from Delaware. I have played in a Marching
Band in High School. I
am 41, and loved Drum and Bugle Corps all my life. This is something that I have a
great love for, and would
love to see what your corp is all about. Although your corp doesn't do field
competions, this sounds like it is the
right fit for me. Not having to give up every weekend in the summer. I play percussion
and would love to come
to PA and watch one of your practices. Hopefully I can become a part of the Musketeer
tradition. Sincerely,
Mark Breitigan

Glad to hear that the Musketeers have a good website, but you should have a sample of
your theme song
played by the corps. If anyone played with the corps. from 1951-1953 when I did, please
contact me. At that
time I was commuting from Newark New Jersey. I played first soprano. Good luck
Musketeers in the new
season.
